| Before the Dam was built
there were many islands on the Missouri River. One of these was Teton Island
(2nd Island down). This island was also known as
Marion Island.
Hormanidas Marion started a market garden on the
island about 1881 and later obtained title to the 172 acre island on which
he and his family lived. He sold fruits and vegetables to both Pierre and
Fort Pierre.
The easterly bank of Marion Island is roughly where
the river bank is now. The westerly bank forms a part of the slew that runs
through Fort Pierre. The northern two lots are now a part of the Marion's
Garden Development.
Marion's Acres and Marion's Pastures can therefore be
said to overlook the previous site of Marion Island.
