PLANTING ADVICE

Section 13 of the Covenants for Marion's Acres and Marion's Pastures state that “Existing trees shall not be removed from the subdivision unless the tree is dead, is an immediate danger of falling, or located on or near the proposed construction for the lot Tree.psd.jpg (192x260 -- 52057 bytes)so as to be an obstacle or interfere with the construction. Trees removed will be replaced at a 3:1 ratio. Homeowners are encouraged to plant trees and shrubs. Homeowners are encouraged to plant trees on the subdivision. No Box Elder, Chinese Elm, or Poplar trees shall be planted on any lot in this addition”.

We have been asked for planting recommendations.

BEFORE YOU BUY any plants, there are several important facts to consider.  First, make sure they are hardy in zone 4 or less.  Plants labeled for zone 5 are marginal and those for zone 6 or above will not survive.  Also, consider heat tolerance, exposure (full shade, full sun, etc.) location and soil (well drained, wet, dry, etc.)  For best results, buy locally.

FOR SHADE TREES, Lindens, Locusts and Hackberries are good choices as well as Burr Oak, Black Walnut, Fallgold Ash or Gingko Biloba.  Avoid all other types of Oak, Red Maple, Norway Maple, Autumn Purple and Autumn Blaze Ash as they do not grow well in this area.  Also, avoid trees labeled “miracle’ or fast growing.

ORNAMENTAL TREES add color by way of flower or foliage.  Flowering crabs offer a wide variety of flower color and heights.  Some great choices would include: Hawthorns, Amur Maple, Serviceberry, Mountain Ash, Homestead Buckeye and Tree Lilac.

EVERGREENS add year round color and beauty.  The best for this area are; Scotch Pine, Austrian Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Black Hills Spruce, Colorado Blue Spruce, Eastern Red Cedar and Upright Junipers. Evergreens to avoid include White Pine, Concolor Fir and Norway Spruce.

JUNIPERS are the best choice for evergreen shrubs.  They already grow wild on Marion’s Acres. They range in size from low spreaders to towering uprights and can tolerate both full sun and part shade.

SHRUBS will grow well in this area.  Some great choices are Barberry, Spirea, Pontentilla, Lilac, Viburnum, Prunus and Dogwoods.

We encourage homeowners to plant trees and shrubs on their premises but remind you that the following species are not permitted on Marion's Pastures or Marion's Acres:  Box Elder, Cottonwood (Seeded), Chinese Elm and Poplar.
